HAWAII GREEN AMENDMENT

The Hawai’i Green Amendment

Since 2021, the Hawai’i Green Amendment movement has educated on and advanced the values of a Hawai’i Green Amendment, securing many successful hearings and committee votes. While the amendment has not yet made it through the entire legislative process, we are hopeful that the good efforts of our movement will ultimately prevail.

Adding Hawai’i Green Amendment language to the state constitution will strengthen the environmental protections already recognized in Article XI, Section 1 that mandates the State hold public natural resources—including land, water, air, minerals and energy sources—in trust for the benefit of all people. Adding individual rights, as proposed in the Hawai’i Green Amendment, will create an enforceable individual right that is on par with other fundamental rights and complements and strengthens the environmental rights of the people.

Green Amendments For The Generations – the Environmental Rights Amendment Movement

Green Amendments For The Generations is an organization working across the nation to secure highest constitutional recognition and protection for our human rights to clean air, pure water, a safe climate, and healthy environments, for both present and future generations. We are proud to partner with on-the-ground leaders in Hawaiʻi state to provide resources, expertise, and capacity for the Hawaiʻi Green Amendment movement.

Our organization has helped to ensure a vibrant Pennsylvania Green Amendment and lead the effort to secure New York’s Green Amendment in 2021. Learn more about the national Green Amendments For The Generations organization.

Green Amendments For The Generations seeks to inspire and support pursuit and passage of self-executing, environmental rights amendments in the Bill of Rights section of every state constitution across the U.S. and ultimately at the federal level.

Once this is accomplished, we will work with communities to ensure strong and meaningful implementation and enforcement of their constitutional Green Amendment rights, just as we are doing in the states that have so far achieved these protections.
